Lewis Ranch - north of Sabinoso Wilderness

East of Las Vegas, San Miguel County, New Mexico

1,650 Acres deeded plus 1,080 acres BLM lease property

Property Overview: Lewis Ranch is a 1,650 acre deeded and 1,080 acres BLM lease property ranch nestled in the remote and scenic Canyon Largo region of San Miguel County, New Mexico. Adjacent to the Sabinoso Wilderness and surrounded by rugged mesas and open range, this ranch offers rare private access to one of the most isolated wilderness areas in the Southwest. The property includes a rustic homestead cabin, a windmill which provided water for the homestead and livestock of unknown condition at this time and miels of open terrain ideal for recreation, conservation, or grazing. This ranch has been in this family since 1978 with Pat & Wilma Lewis the original owners.

BLM Lease and Grazing Rights: In addition to the deeded acreage, the ranch includes a 1,080 acre Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lease with 150 Animal Unit Months (AUMs), offering extended grazing capacity and stewardship opportunities. The lease enhances the ranch's functionality as a working property while expanding its footprint for wildlife habitat and exploration.

Access and Infrastructure: A written easement with the neighbor to the east allows access to the ranch via a 5-mile (MOL) road that traverses Canyon Largo, crossing the Canadian River near the Sabinoso community. This easement allows the owners of the Lewis Ranch and the adjacent 320 acres currently known as the Archuleta property, the approval to maintain (dozer) the 12' wide 'road' historically used to access these properties.

While seasonal high water on the river can limit access, the property remains a true off-grid retreat. The historic homestead cabin was serviced by a windmill-powered well. There is no electric or phone service at the site, preserving the untouched solitude of the area. With New Mexico being on the sunniest states in the United States at an average of 280 days of sunshine per year, solar power would be a very good option.

Structures:  Very little is provided as far as structures are concerned.  As stated previously, a small rustic cabin can be found near the southeast border of the ranch with very old wood pens nearby. Pat & Wilma Lewis moved out of the cabin in the late 1990's and it hasn't been lived in since. These pens would not service livestock, but the location could be used for an updated set. At this time, condition of fences is unknown but this ranch has been leased for cattle grazing in prior years.

Hunting Opportunities: A multitude of wildlife can be found on any given day in the area including but not limited to mule deer, barbery sheep, elk, mountain lion, birds, etc. This ranch is enrolled in the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish EPLUS program allowing landowner permission to gift or sell unlimited elk tags on this ranch. Access to additional hunting is made easier via the Lewis Ranch to BLM land and the Sabinoso Wilderness. The Wilderness has limited access with the public entering from the west, the Lewis Ranch would give access from much further east and from the north. See maps. With all this said, there are an abundance of hunting opportunities if desired.
